Every parent wants their child to do more than memorize facts. They want their child to truly understand what they are learning, and to think clearly and independently about it. That is exactly what Home-School Self-Study courses are built to do, and registration is open now for primary school students across Trinidad and Tobago.
Our courses are designed around three connected goals: building real knowledge, deepening understanding, and strengthening critical thinking. Together, these three skills are what carry a child from simply passing a test to genuinely mastering a subject.
Why Knowledge, Understanding, and Critical Thinking Matter Together
Knowledge alone is not enough. A child can memorize a list of facts and still struggle to apply them. Understanding is what connects those facts together into something meaningful, and critical thinking is what allows a child to use that understanding to solve new problems, ask good questions, and reason through situations they have never seen before.
Our courses are structured to build all three at once, rather than treating them as separate goals. Every lesson is designed to give a child something to know, something to understand, and something to think through.
What You Will Find in Our Course Catalog

Activities for Ages 5 to 11 to Build These Skills at Home
These activities help build knowledge, understanding, and critical thinking in ways suited to different primary school age groups, and pair naturally with our courses.
For Ages 5 to 7: Building Early Thinking Skills
- Why questions. After reading a short story together, ask your child one simple “why” question about a character’s choice, encouraging them to think beyond just what happened.
- Sort and explain. Have your child sort a group of objects, like toys or fruit, into categories, then explain out loud why they grouped them that way.
- Guess and check. Before finishing a story or activity, ask your child to guess what happens next, then check their guess against what actually happens.
- New word of the day. Introduce one new vocabulary word each day and have your child use it in a sentence about their own life.
For Ages 8 to 11: Building Independent Reasoning
- Compare two ideas. Have your child pick two things, like two animals, two characters, or two solutions to a problem, and write a few sentences comparing how they are similar and different.
- Past paper practice. Work through one past paper question together each week, focusing not just on the right answer, but on explaining the reasoning behind it.
- Debate a simple question. Pick a simple, age-appropriate question and have your child argue one side, then the other, to practice seeing an issue from multiple angles.
- Summarize in three sentences. After reading a passage, have your child summarize it in exactly three sentences, building comprehension and concise thinking.
- Explain it to someone else. Have your child teach a concept they just learned to a sibling, parent, or friend, since explaining something is one of the strongest tests of real understanding.
