Every year on October 11th, the world observes International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to recognising girls’ rights and the unique challenges and opportunities they face around the world. It is a day to celebrate girls’ potential and to recommit to giving every girl the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.
For homeschooling families, it is also a meaningful opportunity to talk with children, both girls and boys, about equality, confidence, and the importance of education for every child.
The Story Behind International Day of the Girl Child
International Day of the Girl Child was established by the United Nations in 2012 to focus attention on the needs and rights of girls worldwide, including access to education, protection from discrimination, and opportunities to develop their full potential. The day grew out of a global recognition that girls, in many parts of the world, continue to face barriers to education and equality that boys do not.
Each year’s observance highlights a different theme, but the core message remains the same: investing in girls creates stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger future for everyone.
Why This Day Matters for Homeschooling Families
Education is at the heart of International Day of the Girl Child, and as a homeschooling family, you are already living out that value every day. Talking with children about why education matters, and why it should be available to every child regardless of gender, helps build empathy and awareness from an early age.
This is also a chance to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in every field, from science and sport to art and leadership, and to encourage every child’s confidence in their own abilities.

Activities for Ages 5 to 11 to Celebrate International Day of the Girl Child
These activities help children think about equality, confidence, and the value of education for every child.
For Ages 5 to 7: Simple Awareness
- “When I grow up” drawing. Have your child draw a picture of what they want to be when they grow up, and talk about how every child, girl or boy, can dream big.
- Celebrate a role model. Read a short, age-appropriate story about a girl or woman who achieved something inspiring, and talk about what made her special.
- Kindness and fairness chat. Talk with your child about what it means to treat everyone fairly, regardless of whether they are a boy or a girl.
- “Everyone can” poster. Have your child draw a poster showing boys and girls doing the same activities, like reading, playing sports, or doing science experiments.
For Ages 8 to 11: Deeper Learning
- Research a notable girl or woman. Have your child research a girl or woman from history or today who made a difference, and write a short summary of her story.
- Write about education. Have your child write a few sentences about why they think every child deserves the chance to go to school and learn.
- Compare opportunities. Help your child learn about how access to education for girls differs in various parts of the world, and discuss why that matters.
- Letter of encouragement. Have your child write a short letter encouraging a younger sibling, cousin, or friend to believe in their own potential, regardless of gender.
