Every year on October 10th, people around the world observe World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about emotional wellbeing and reminding each other that how we feel matters just as much as our physical health. For homeschooling families, it is a gentle invitation to make space for feelings alongside lessons.
Children, like adults, experience a wide range of emotions, excitement, frustration, worry, joy, often without the words to describe them yet. Helping children name and understand their feelings is one of the most valuable things we can teach them.
Why Emotional Wellbeing Matters for Children
Just as we teach children to read and do arithmetic, we can also teach them to recognise their emotions and healthy ways to express them. A child who can say “I feel frustrated” instead of simply acting out has gained a real and lasting skill.
World Mental Health Day is a reminder that emotional wellbeing is not a separate subject to teach once a year. It is woven into everyday moments, a calm conversation after a hard day, a reassuring word before a difficult lesson, or simply being asked “how are you feeling?” and really listening to the answer.
Supporting Emotional Wellbeing in a Homeschool Setting
Homeschooling gives families a unique opportunity to notice and respond to a child’s emotional needs in real time, something that can be harder to do in a larger classroom setting. A parent can see when a child is struggling, offer a short break, or simply talk things through before continuing with a lesson.
Building small, steady routines, regular breaks, encouraging words, and time to talk about the day, helps children feel secure, and children who feel secure are better able to focus, learn, and grow.
How Home-School Self-Study Supports the Whole Child
At Home-School Self-Study, we believe learning works best when a child feels supported, not just academically but emotionally too. Our structured, curriculum-aligned courses for primary school students in Trinidad and Tobago are designed with manageable pacing, so children are not left feeling overwhelmed or rushed.
We encourage parents to check in with their children regularly, not only about what they are learning, but about how they are feeling while they learn. A supported child is a child who can thrive.
Activities for Ages 5 to 11 to Celebrate World Mental Health Day
These activities give children simple, positive ways to think and talk about their feelings.
For Ages 5 to 7: Simple Feelings Awareness
- Feelings faces drawing. Have your child draw faces showing happy, sad, excited, and worried, and talk about when they might feel each one.
- Colour your mood. Give your child a blank outline of a person and have them colour it using colours that match how they feel today.
- Gratitude moment. At the end of the day, ask your child to name one thing that made them smile.
- Calm breathing practice. Teach your child a simple breathing exercise, breathe in for four counts, out for four counts, to use when they feel upset.
For Ages 8 to 11: Deeper Emotional Learning
- Feelings journal. Have your child write a few sentences each day about how they are feeling and why, building a simple habit of self-reflection.
- Kindness challenge. Have your child choose one kind thing to do for someone else each day this week, and talk about how it made them feel.
- “What helps me feel better” list. Have your child make a list of healthy things that help them feel calmer, like talking to someone, drawing, or going outside.
- Letter to a friend. Have your child write a short letter to a friend or family member, checking in on how they are doing.
A Day to Check In, With Ourselves and Each Other
World Mental Health Day is a reminder that emotional wellbeing deserves the same care and attention we give to any other part of learning and growing. A simple conversation, a listening ear, or a quiet moment together can make a real difference.
