Most children in Trinidad and Tobago make steady, visible progress through the primary school curriculum — reading gets easier, numbers make more sense, and writing becomes more fluent with each passing term. But for some children, one or more of these areas remain stubbornly, unexpectedly difficult, no matter how much support, repetition, or encouragement they receive at home and at school.
Learning disorders — sometimes called specific learning disabilities or specific learning difficulties — are a group of neurodevelopmental conditions that affect the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, or communicate information in specific academic areas: reading, writing, or mathematics. They are not related to intelligence, effort, or motivation. A child with a learning disorder can be, and very often is, highly intelligent, imaginative, and hardworking, while still finding a specific academic skill genuinely, persistently difficult.
In Trinidad and Tobago, learning disorders remain significantly under-identified. Many children move through the entire primary school system, including the high-stakes SEA exam, without ever being properly assessed — their difficulties attributed instead to laziness, poor attitude, or simply “not being a maths person” or “not being a reading person.” This guide is written to help T&T parents recognise the signs of a learning disorder, understand what the different types look like, and know what steps to take next.

What Are Learning Disorders?
Learning disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions, meaning they relate to differences in how the brain is wired to process specific types of information. They are present from early childhood, though they often are not recognised until a child begins to struggle noticeably with formal schoolwork.
The defining feature of a learning disorder is a specific and unexpected gap — a child’s performance in one particular academic area (reading, writing, or maths) falls well below what would be expected given their age, their overall intelligence, and the instruction they have received, even though their ability in other areas may be entirely typical or even advanced.
Learning disorders are grouped into several recognised categories, though a child may have difficulties in more than one area at once:
Dyslexia — a specific learning disorder affecting reading accuracy, fluency, and spelling, rooted in difficulty processing the sounds within words.
Dyscalculia — a specific learning disorder affecting the understanding of numbers, number relationships, and mathematical reasoning.
Dysgraphia — a specific learning disorder affecting handwriting, spelling, and the physical and organisational process of getting thoughts down on paper.
Language-based learning disorders — difficulties with understanding or using spoken and written language more broadly, which can affect vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to follow and produce connected, organised language.
Learning disorders are not caused by poor parenting, insufficient effort, poor teaching alone, low intelligence, or vision or hearing problems (though these should always be ruled out during assessment). They have a strong genetic and neurological basis, frequently run in families, and often occur alongside other conditions such as ADHD.
Signs of a Reading-Based Learning Disorder
A child with a reading-based learning disorder may show:
- Slow, effortful, or inaccurate reading that does not match the amount of practice and instruction the child has received
- Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words, often guessing based on the first letter or the general shape of a word
- Persistent spelling difficulty, including spelling the same word differently within the same piece of writing
- A significant gap between the child’s spoken vocabulary and understanding, which may be strong, and their reading and writing skills, which lag well behind
- Avoidance of reading tasks, reluctance to read aloud, or visible anxiety around reading-based activities
Signs of a Mathematics-Based Learning Disorder
A child with dyscalculia or another mathematics-based learning disorder may show:
- Persistent difficulty understanding what numbers actually represent — struggling to grasp that the number “5” refers to a quantity of five things, well past the age when this concept is typically secure
- Difficulty with basic number sense, such as quickly recognising which of two numbers is larger, or estimating a reasonable answer to a simple problem
- Ongoing reliance on finger counting or very basic counting strategies for simple addition and subtraction, long after classmates have moved on to more efficient mental strategies
- Difficulty memorising and recalling basic maths facts, such as times tables, even with extensive repetition and practice
- Confusion with mathematical symbols and operations — mixing up addition and subtraction signs, or forgetting which operation to apply in a word problem
- Difficulty understanding place value, meaning a child may not grasp why the “2” in “24” represents twenty rather than two
- Trouble with mathematical language and word problems, even when the underlying numerical concept is one the child can manage in isolation
- Anxiety specifically around maths tasks, timed tests, or being asked to solve problems in front of others
- Difficulty with related everyday skills such as telling the time on an analogue clock, understanding money and making change, or estimating measurements
Dyscalculia is often the least recognised of the specific learning disorders in T&T, in part because difficulties with reading tend to be flagged more quickly by teachers, while a child who struggles with maths is more often simply told they need to “practise more.”
Signs of a Writing-Based Learning Disorder
A child with dysgraphia or another writing-based learning disorder may show:
- Handwriting that is difficult to read, inconsistent in size and spacing, or produced very slowly and with visible physical effort
- Significant difficulty organising thoughts on paper, even when the same ideas can be explained clearly and in detail verbally
- Written work that is notably shorter, less detailed, and less developed than the child’s spoken explanations of the same topic
- Difficulty with the physical mechanics of writing — an awkward pencil grip, hand fatigue or cramping during writing tasks, or visible discomfort during extended writing activities
- Frequent spelling errors and grammatical mistakes in written work that do not appear in the child’s spoken language
- Difficulty copying text accurately from a board or book, often losing their place or making frequent errors
- Strong resistance to writing tasks specifically, even when the child is otherwise engaged and cooperative with schoolwork
- A significant, visible gap between the neatness and organisation of the child’s drawing or other fine motor activities and the neatness and organisation of their handwriting
Signs That Cut Across Learning Disorders
Some signs are common across multiple types of learning disorders and are worth watching for regardless of which specific academic area seems most affected:
- A persistent, significant gap between a child’s spoken ability and their performance in a specific academic skill
- Slow processing speed specifically on tasks involving the affected skill, even when general thinking speed is typical
- Growing anxiety, frustration, or avoidance connected to a specific subject or type of task
- A family history of similar academic difficulties in parents or siblings
- Strong performance in some subjects alongside persistent, unexpected struggle in one specific area
- A widening gap between the child’s ability and their classmates’ ability in the affected area as the school years progress, despite consistent effort and support
How Learning Disorders Show Up at School in T&T
The T&T primary school curriculum, particularly as children approach the SEA exam, places heavy and simultaneous demands on reading, writing, and mathematical reasoning. A child with a learning disorder in even one of these areas can face significant, compounding pressure as the academic demands intensify year after year.
What parents and teachers often see at school:
- Test results that seem inconsistent with the child’s evident intelligence and effort in class
- Comments from teachers describing the child as capable “when they apply themselves,” alongside consistently below-expected results in one specific area
- A child who performs well in oral discussion or practical, hands-on activities but struggles significantly on written tests and timed assessments
- Growing reluctance to attend school on days involving tests or assessments in the affected subject
- A widening performance gap between the child and their peers in one specific subject area, even as performance in other subjects remains age-appropriate
- Behavioural changes — withdrawal, acting out, or a sudden loss of confidence — that coincide with the introduction of more demanding work in the affected area
Because SEA preparation places such heavy simultaneous weight on reading, writing, and mathematics, an undiagnosed learning disorder in any one of these areas can have an outsized effect on a child’s overall exam performance and, more importantly, on their confidence as a learner.
How Learning Disorders Show Up at Home
At home, children with learning disorders often:
- Take significantly longer than expected to complete homework in the affected subject, frequently accompanied by frustration, tears, or refusal
- Show a clear, visible gap between how they discuss a topic verbally and how they perform the same task in writing or in the affected academic area
- Avoid specific types of homework or study tasks while remaining willing and even enthusiastic about others
- Express strong, specific negative beliefs about themselves connected to the affected subject — “I’m just bad at maths,” “I can’t write,” or “I’m stupid at reading” — even when their overall self-esteem and confidence in other areas is healthy
- Show signs of exhaustion or mental fatigue specifically after tasks involving the affected skill, even when other homework does not produce the same reaction
- Benefit disproportionately from one-on-one support, additional time, or a different method of instruction in the affected area, compared to their classroom experience
What You Can Do at Home
A diagnosis of a learning disorder does not change who your child is or limit what they can ultimately achieve. It identifies a specific, genuine barrier, and it opens the door to strategies, accommodations, and instructional approaches that make a real and measurable difference.
Strategy 1: Seek a Proper Assessment
If you suspect your child has a learning disorder, the first step is a comprehensive assessment by a qualified professional — typically an educational psychologist, who can assess reading, writing, and mathematics skills alongside a measure of overall cognitive ability, establishing whether there is a genuine, unexpected gap that meets the criteria for a specific learning disorder.
In T&T, assessments are available through the Student Support Services Division of the Ministry of Education, private educational psychologists, and some school-based referral pathways. Waiting times through public services can be lengthy, so many families pursue a private assessment in parallel with a school-based request for support.
A good assessment identifies not only that a difficulty exists, but precisely where it lies — which specific skills are affected, and which are not — which is essential for building an effective, targeted support plan rather than a generic one.

Strategy 2: Match the Teaching Method to the Specific Difficulty
Different learning disorders respond best to different instructional approaches. A reading disorder generally responds well to structured, systematic phonics instruction. A mathematics disorder often responds best to concrete, hands-on approaches that build genuine number sense before moving to abstract symbols and procedures. A writing disorder often benefits from separating the generation of ideas from the physical or organisational demands of writing them down, at least initially.
Generic “try harder” or “practise more” approaches rarely help a child with a genuine learning disorder, because the difficulty is not primarily about the amount of practice — it is about the method of instruction matching the way the child’s brain actually processes that specific type of information.
Strategy 3: Separate the Skill Being Assessed From the Skill That Is Difficult
Wherever possible, assess your child’s understanding of a concept using a method that does not depend on their area of difficulty. If your child has a writing disorder, let them explain a science concept verbally rather than insisting on an extended written answer. If your child has a mathematics disorder, make sure a word problem’s language complexity is not adding an additional, unrelated barrier on top of the numerical challenge.
This approach protects your child from being penalised twice — once for the genuine area of difficulty, and again in subjects or tasks where that particular skill is not actually the point.
Strategy 4: Build Confidence Deliberately, Not Just Skill
Children with learning disorders are at meaningfully higher risk of developing anxiety, low self-esteem, and negative beliefs about their own ability, precisely because their genuine effort so often goes unrecognised in a system that measures success primarily through test results and written output.
Deliberately track and celebrate effort and incremental progress, not just final outcomes. Help your child understand, explicitly and repeatedly, that a learning disorder affects a specific skill, not their intelligence or their worth as a student and as a person.
Strategy 5: Work With Educators Who Understand Learning Disorders
A child with a learning disorder needs educators who understand that a specific, persistent difficulty in one area does not reflect the child’s overall intelligence or effort, who are trained in the specific instructional approaches that genuinely help, and who are willing to assess understanding through methods that do not unnecessarily penalise the child’s area of difficulty.

What Parents Can Do: Activities for Children Ages 5–11
The following four activities are designed for T&T parents who want to support a child with a learning disorder (or a learning-disorder-like profile) at home. Each activity targets a foundational skill relevant to reading, writing, or mathematics, and each is adaptable across the full primary school age range.
Activity 1: The Number Sense Builder (Ages 5–9)
This activity builds genuine number sense — an intuitive understanding of quantity and number relationships — which is the foundational skill most closely linked to later difficulty with mathematics.
What You Need: A collection of small, everyday objects (buttons, stones, bottle caps, or dried beans), and a simple ten-frame drawn on paper or card (a two-by-five grid).
Steps:
- Give your child a small handful of objects and ask them to count them aloud, moving each object as they count to build a physical connection between the number word and the quantity.
- Introduce the ten-frame, and have your child place objects into it one at a time, discussing how many spaces are filled and how many remain empty — this builds an intuitive sense of numbers in relation to ten, which supports later place value understanding.
- Ask comparison questions using the objects: “Which pile has more? How do you know? How many more?” Encourage your child to explain their reasoning aloud, not just state the answer.
- Practise simple addition and subtraction using the physical objects before moving to numbers on paper — for example, “You have six buttons. I am taking away two. How many are left?” — allowing your child to physically remove and count rather than relying solely on memorised facts.
- Gradually reduce reliance on the objects as your child’s confidence grows, but always allow them to return to physical materials when a new or more difficult concept is introduced.
For Infants–Standard One (Ages 5–7): Keep numbers small (within twenty) and keep the activity playful — sorting, comparing, and building with objects your child already enjoys handling.
For Standard Two–Three (Ages 8–9): Extend to larger numbers and introduce simple place value activities using the ten-frame structure — grouping objects into tens and ones to represent two-digit numbers concretely.
Why This Works: Children with mathematics-based learning disorders often have a specific difficulty with the abstract symbolic representation of number, while retaining a much stronger capacity to understand quantity when it is presented concretely and physically. Building genuine number sense through hands-on materials, before and alongside abstract symbols, gives these children a foundation that pure worksheet practice often fails to provide.
Activity 2: The Talk-It-Out-First Writing Method (Ages 6–11)
This activity separates the skill of generating and organising ideas from the physical and mechanical demands of writing, supporting children with writing-based learning disorders who often think far more clearly than their written work reflects.
What You Need: A quiet space, and either a notebook or a voice recording device (a phone voice memo app works well).
Steps:
- Before your child begins any writing task, have them explain out loud what they want to say — the full idea, in as much detail as they like, without worrying at all about spelling, grammar, or handwriting at this stage.
- If helpful, record this spoken explanation, or have your child talk while you jot down brief keyword notes (not full sentences) capturing the key points in the order they mention them.
- Once the idea is fully talked through, help your child turn the spoken explanation into a simple, visual plan — a few keywords or a simple diagram showing the order of ideas — before any full sentences are written.
- Have your child write just one sentence at a time from this plan, checking it against the plan and their original spoken explanation as they go, rather than trying to hold the entire piece of writing in their head at once.
- Praise the ideas and content first and separately from the mechanics — celebrate a strong, clear explanation even if the spelling and handwriting need further work, and address the mechanical elements as a distinct, second step.
For Standard One–Two (Ages 6–8): Rely heavily on the spoken and drawn stages, keeping the actual written output very short — a single sentence or a labelled picture is a genuine success at this stage.
For Standard Four–Five (Ages 10–11): Extend the method to longer pieces of writing, such as short essays or reports, using the spoken explanation and keyword plan as scaffolding for a more developed piece, and consider introducing speech-to-text tools to bridge the gap between strong verbal ideas and the physical writing process.
Why This Works: Writing simultaneously demands idea generation, organisation, spelling, grammar, and the physical mechanics of handwriting — an enormous cognitive load that can overwhelm a child with a specific writing difficulty. Separating these demands into distinct stages allows the child’s genuine thinking and ideas to be captured and valued, rather than being lost or obscured by the mechanical difficulty of writing.
Activity 3: The Real-World Maths Hunt (Ages 7–11)
This activity connects abstract mathematical concepts to concrete, meaningful, real-world contexts, helping children with mathematics-based learning disorders build understanding through practical application rather than isolated drills.
What You Need: Everyday household or community contexts — a kitchen, a local shop, a bus fare, or a family budgeting task — and a notebook to record findings.
Steps:
- Choose a real-world context connected to a mathematical concept your child is currently working on — measuring ingredients for a recipe for fractions and measurement, comparing prices at a shop for multiplication and estimation, or working out change from a purchase for subtraction and money skills.
- Involve your child directly and practically in the task — actually measuring the ingredients, actually comparing the prices, actually calculating the change — rather than working through a similar problem on a worksheet alone.
- Talk through the maths involved explicitly as you go: “We need three-quarters of a cup. If we only have a half-cup measure, how many times do we need to fill it?”
- Record the real task and the maths involved together in a notebook, building a personal reference of concepts your child has successfully applied in a meaningful, memorable context.
- Revisit these real-world examples when introducing a related, more abstract concept at school or in homework: “Remember when we worked out the change at the shop? This is the same kind of subtraction.”
For Standard Two–Three (Ages 7–9): Focus on very concrete, immediate contexts — counting money for a small purchase, sharing a snack equally among family members, or reading a simple recipe.
For Standard Four–Five (Ages 10–11): Extend to more complex, multi-step real-world tasks — planning a simple family budget, calculating the total cost of a shopping list with a fixed amount of money, or working out travel time and distance for a family trip.
Why This Works: Children with dyscalculia and related difficulties often struggle most with abstract, symbolic mathematics presented in isolation, while showing much stronger understanding when the same concepts are anchored in concrete, meaningful, real-world experience. Real-world application also builds genuine motivation, since the maths clearly matters for something the child cares about.
Activity 4: The Strengths and Struggles Map (Ages 7–11)
This activity builds a child’s accurate, balanced self-understanding of their own specific learning profile, helping to prevent the common pattern where a difficulty in one area generalises into a broader, inaccurate belief that the child is “bad at school” or “not smart.”
What You Need: A large sheet of paper divided into two columns, one for “Things I Find Easy” and one for “Things I Find Hard,” with space for a third column: “What Helps.”
Steps:
- Sit with your child at a calm, unpressured moment and work through the first two columns together, filling in specific subjects, skills, or types of tasks your child finds easy and specific ones they find hard — encouraging real specificity rather than broad statements like “school” or “everything.”
- For each item in the “hard” column, discuss and record in the third column what has genuinely helped in the past, even a little — extra time, having something explained a different way, doing something out loud first, or using a particular tool or strategy.
- Revisit and update the map together every few months, adding new strengths as they emerge and refining strategies that have proven helpful or unhelpful.
- Use the map actively — before a new, difficult task, look at the map together and ask, “This looks like one of your hard things. What has helped before?”
- Deliberately and explicitly separate the “hard” column from any statement about intelligence or worth: “This is something that’s harder for your brain right now — it says nothing about how smart or capable you are.”
For Standard Two–Three (Ages 7–9): Use simple, concrete language and perhaps drawings alongside words, keeping the exercise light, honest, and non-judgemental.
For Standard Four–Five (Ages 10–11): Involve the child more actively in identifying their own strategies, moving toward genuine self-advocacy — the ability to identify and ask for what specifically helps them learn, a skill that becomes increasingly important as they move toward secondary school.
Why This Works: Children with learning disorders are at real risk of over-generalising a specific difficulty into a broad, damaging belief about their overall intelligence or capability. Explicitly and repeatedly mapping specific strengths alongside specific struggles — and pairing every struggle with a concrete strategy that helps — builds an accurate, resilient, and genuinely more hopeful sense of self as a learner.

A Final Word: A Learning Disorder Is a Specific Difficulty, Not a Global Limit
A diagnosis of a learning disorder is not a verdict on who your child is or what they are ultimately capable of. It identifies a specific, genuine barrier in a specific academic skill — a barrier that, understood and supported well, does not have to define your child’s academic future or their sense of their own worth and intelligence.
